Trainer Gary Portelli was disappointed with Rebel Dane’s first-up performance for sixth in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) on March 27th but remains optimistic his runner is capable of a returned to the winner’s circle in Saturday’s Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.
Jumping from the gates well, jockey Craig Williams immediately led the son of California Dane towards the fore of the field of 14; receiving a good run in transit but failing to keep up of the late pace in the final straight and fading noticeably.
Conceding the five-year-old may have to be settled at the rear of the field before a late burst, Portelli told AAP he will instruct jockey Blake Shinn accordingly and is hopeful of a positive result in the 2015 All Aged Stakes.
“Unfortunately it looks like he has to be given a cold ride … so he’ll be strong late,” Portelli said.
“I was disappointed with the result. I thought he would win that race.
“The position he was in you would think that was the perfect position for most horses.
“But for him I just think he was a little bit too close.
“If you get him racing early he wants to get on with it too much and he doesn’t finish the race off.”
Confirmed to line up alongside the likes of leading sprinters Chautauqua and Terravista, Portelli is hopeful their most recent run on heavy ground in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) two weeks ago will play into the strengths of Rebel Dane on Saturday.
“Sometimes those horses coming off a heavy track back onto a good track can have a little bit of speed taken out of them,” Portelli said.
“That’s my hope anyway. You got to have something otherwise you’re defeated before you start.”
Posting a commendable race record of six wins and four minor place finishes through his 21 career starts so far, Rebel Dane is a Group 1 winner over the distance having taken out the 2013 edition of the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, and should lay a great account for himself in the 2015 All Aged Stakes.
