Team Hawkes’ last start TJ Smith Stakes winner Chautauqua is the clear favourite in All Aged Stakes 2015 betting for the feature race at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
The four-year-old Encosta De Lago stallion is one of 13 middle distance sprinters making up the field for this autumn’s $400,000 Group 1 Schweppes All Aged Stakes (1400m), the weight-for-age classic due to jump as Randwick Race 6 at 3:45pm (AEST).
Drawn a treat with the inside alley, $3 favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au Chautauqua will again be ridden by Tommy Berry after the duo paired up to win the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at the track last time out.
The TJ Smith Stakes is the most successful All Aged Stakes lead-up in the past 10 years producing four winners in that time including one – Bentley Biscuit (2007) – to complete the same double Chautauqua is tipped to achieve this weekend.
He is up over 1400m for the first time in nearly 12 months but based on his fast finishing effort last time out he could be even better over the extra metres on the weekend.
Chautauqua is followed in the latest All Aged Stakes odds at Ladbrokes by four other single figure hopes including Terravista ($6) and Lucky Hussler ($6.50) who had very different luck in the barrier draw.
Joe Pride’s Darley Classic winner from the spring Terravista jumps from barrier two while Lucky Hussler, a last start Group 1 William Reid Stakes winner under the lights at Moonee Valley from March 27, has work to do from the outside alley.
Hugh Bowman rides five-year-old Terravista who is a definite Randwick track specialist boasting four wins from five previous starts on the course, his only loss to date a close third in the TJ Smith Stakes last time out.
Lucky Hussler meanwhile has the Melbourne Group 1 winning form but no All Aged Stakes winner in over 30 years has jumped from double digits giving him and jockey Glen Boss one hell of a hoodoo to overcome for the upset.
The other hopes under $10 for the win in Saturday’s major are then exciting three-year-old Group 1 winners Shooting To Win ($7.50) and Wandjina ($8).
Three-year-olds have an ace recent record against the older horses in the All Aged Stakes with two in the past three years saluting.
Peter & Paul Snowden prepare Caulfield Guineas champ Shooting To Win who jumps from gate five and comes off a brave fifth to Japan’s Real Impact in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill from March 21.
Wandjina meanwhile looks a top chance despite the nasty barrier 12 draw for jockey Damien Oliver.
The in-form Snitzel colt is prepared by the race’s most successful trainer Gai Waterhouse who shoots for her fifth All Aged Stakes win with this last start Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) winning youngster.
For more value punters looking further down the markets could be attracted to the likes of Peter Moody’s market drifter Dissident ($10) who is a four time Group 1 winner and has plenty of nice form over the 1400m or even the third 3YO in the mix Scissor Kick ($15) out to improve on his fifth last time out back in February who is undefeated in two previous Randwick runs.
