Blake Shinn had several options for Saturday’s 2016 All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick, but is confident he has made the correct decision in choosing to continue his affiliation with classy gelding Malaguerra in the feature race.
Malaguerra has been a standout performer for Lee and Anthony Freedman through recent seasons and is so-far undefeated in 2016, having delivered talented fields comfortably defeats in each of the Listed Bob Hoysted Handicap (1000m) and Group 3 Kingdom Stakes (1200m).
Having picked up the ride on the son of Magnus in place of Ben Melham last time out, Shinn said he was thrilled with the feel offered up by the gelding and is confident he displays all the signs of an All Aged Stakes winner.
“I was very impressed with him last start. He got held up for a long way and when he got out he showed what an impressive sprint he has,” Shinn said.
Shinn also had the opportunity to partner the Gai Waterhouse-trained English in the 2016 All Aged Stakes who has been charged with carrying only 54.5kgs, but remains confident Malaguerra is the horse to beat on Saturday.
“English had the light weight and I didn’t think there was much between them so I stuck with Malaguerra,” he said.
Lee Freedman is similarly confident in Malaguerra’s chances in the 2016 All Aged Stakes and is confident the horse will line up for the race in peak condition, ahead of a Brisbane Winter Carnival campaign geared towards the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in June.
“The plan is the Stradbroke. He is a very good, young horse in form and they might find out how good he is,” Freedman said.
Malaguerra began his racing career under the guidance of Wez Hunter in early 2014, and has posted an impressive nine wins and two minors through only sixteen competitive starts to date.
